Two Children Critically ill after being hit by a Speeding Car in Leeds

Leeds (UK): A two-year-old boy, Raham Saleem, and his 10-year-old sister Sabam, are critically ill in hospital after being knocked down in a hit and run accident, police said.

Detectives have asked the driver of a silver Vauxhall Astra to come forward after the collision in Brudenell Road, Hyde Park, Leeds, at around 5.20pm on Saturday (18/08/12).

The incident occurred as the children were crossing the road with another child near the Makkah Masjid Mosque in West Yorkshire. They were walking home after buying onions for the family's Eid celebrations.

Police said the driver slowed down to see what had happened before speeding away from the scene.

The boy and girl were taken to Leeds General Infirmary with what police said were serious wounds, and they remained in a critical condition after surgery.

They went to the shop to buy some onions for their mam, preparing for the Eid celebrations today.

They were crossing the road and they were struck by a vehicle, both were injured and underwent operations overnight.

We are very concerned about their condition.

We are in the early stages of investigating this incident but have already secured CCTV which detectives are studying and have spoken to witnesses.

Wide-ranging inquiries by detectives and specialist officers are under way to trace the driver of this car and I would urge that driver to come forward and contact us now before they receive a knock on the door.

We know the vehicle slowed down and we know they then sped off.

The family of these youngsters are understandably extremely distressed and for their sake we are keen to trace this driver as soon as possible.

If it is a relative or a friend of yours and they have told you, then please pick up the phone and call us as a matter of urgency.

This is a small, close-knit community and people want to help.

– DETECTIVE SUPERINTENDENT PAUL TAYLOR

Detectives know the car is a mark four model, meaning it was made between 1998 and 2005.

CCTV has already been examined and experts will study more footage in a bid to identify the car's registration number.

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for information, which can be given to the team on 101 or anonymously to CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
